MS. JOHN'S CLASS
  • Grade 4 Classroom
  • Meet Ms. John
Welcome to your virtual classroom, my
amazing grade 4/5 st
udents!

Big Ideas - Term 1:

English Language Arts 4/5: Language and text can be a source of creativity and joy. Exploring stories and other texts helps us understand ourselves and make connections to others and to the world.

Math 4: Regular changes in patterns can be identified and represented using tools and tables. Fractions and decimals are types of numbers that can represent quantities.

Math 5: Identified regularities in number patterns can be expressed in tables. Numbers describe quantities that can be represented by equivalent fractions.

Social Studies 4/5: The pursuit of valuable natural resources has played a key role in changing the land, people, and communities of Canada. Canada’s policies and treatment of minority peoples have negative and positive legacies.

Science 4/5: All living things sense and respond to their environment. Multicellular organisms have organ systems that enable them to survive and interact within their environment.

Health Education 4/5: Understanding ourselves and the various aspects of health helps us develop a balanced lifestyle.

Career Education 4/5: Public identity is influenced by personal choices and decisions. Exploring our strengths and abilities can help us identify our goals.

Self-Regulation

The following is a step-by-step plan for Self-Regulation in our classroom:

Step 1: Problem-Solving: Inspired by Mrs. Toovey, students are familiar or will become familiar on how to problem-solve. When required, the students will take responsibility to independently problem-solve. If the problem is left unsolved, we will move onto the next step.

Step 2: Self-Regulation Chart: If adult support is required, we will problem solve together. Once the problem is solved, we will determine who must take responsibility. Those responsible must get out the chart and independently determine what expectation was broken. On the chart, you will see that there are 4 allocations per day that coordinate where the student is at in regards to the follow-up. If an expectation was not followed, they must record the number of that expectation under the appropriate follow-up. I will not partake in step 1. If the expectations are not followed, I will go directly to step 2.

Expectations: On the first day of school, the students collaborated to determine 8 expectations: (1) Wash hands often or use hand sanitizer at appropriate times; (2) Make each other feel safe; (3) Keep a safe distance or keep out of peoples’ bubble; (4) Treat supplies with respect; (5) Act fast to the changes we are facing; (6) Always stay focused; (7) Respect differences of all; (8) Keep content and have fun.

Follow-Up: On the first day of school, I will introduce the following follow-ups: (1) Warning; (2) Five minute classroom cool down; (3) Letter of apology; (4) If the rules are broken four times or more in a day I will make a parent/guardian phone call. When necessary, a student may be referred to the office.

The Zones of Regulation: Each student must use the appropriate pencil crayon to share how they felt throughout the day. The zones of self-regulation are as followed:

Blue Zone: sad, sick, tired, bored, moving slowly
Green Zone: happy, calm, feeling okay, focused, ready to learn
Yellow Zone: frustrated, worried, silly, wiggly, excited, loss of some control
Red Zone: mad, angry, mean, terrified, yelling, hitting, out of control

Every day is a new day. It is okay to feel any emotion, but it is not okay to project your negative emotions onto others. It’s okay to make mistakes. It’s okay to be honest. Please take the time to visit the chart with your child and have discussions about their day based off the information that they provided.

Homework

Homework Folder: Each student has a Homework Folder that goes home every night. Items found on the left side are to be, "Left at Home." Items found on the right side are to be brought, "Right Back to School." For further requirements, you will find a zip lock bag labeled, "Money and Notes.” Check the folder each evening for school notes, permission forms, the Self-Regulation chart, and homework.

Reading Log: In the homework folder, you will find a reading log for your child to record what has been read each time.

Math: In the homework folder, you will find the basic facts sheet your child can use for reference.

Other:  I am trusting students to independently pack up any unfinished work. Novel Study will go home over the weekend. Talk to your child about placing unfinished work into the home folder under, “Right Back to School.”

At times, there may be other assignments/projects that must be completed at home (ex: Science Fair, Star Student Presentation, etc.)
